On an SVC Backstepping Damping Nonlinear Controller Design for Power Systems

Abstract: A damping controller for a Static Var Compensator (SVC) is designed using a backstepping control technique to enhance voltage regulation and power system stability. The damping control problem is formulated as an optimization problem using a detailed model of the power system including static and dynamic loads. A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to obtain the optimal control parameter gains. Nonlinear time domain simulations are carried out to examine the performance of the proposed control technique on a single and a multi machine power system. The results for both systems show that the proposedSVC damping controller is superior to conventional lead-lag design especially under high loading conditions and severe contingencies.
